BETHLEHEM UNITED METHODIST CHURCHBethlehem United Methodist Church (BUMC) is situated in the affluent community of Thornton, approximately 20 miles west and south of Philadelphia, in southeastern PA.
BUMC has been in the community for approximately 160 years. The current sanctuary was constructed of serpentine stone in 1891 in a then modern Gothic style. The interior is oak with stained glass windows and open truss work. The sanctuary seats approximately 200 on cushioned pews.
BUMC is a Biblically conservative, evangelical, Purpose Driven church. We currently have a traditional service at 8:00 am and two contemporary services at 9:30 am and 11:00 am. All services could probably be categorized as somewhat blended, by design.
The full-time Pastoral staff includes Senior Pastor, Tim Kriebel who was appointed to BUMC July 1, 2007. In January 2008 a new full-time children’s Pastor, Josh Shaffer, was hired. Youth Pastor Tom Wolff has been attending BUMC for over twenty years and also serves as Executive Pastor.
The Sunday worship attendance is 260-300. The community around us has grown substantially. Challenged by this growth, approximately two years ago the leadership began to pray and seek God concerning the direction of BUMC. It was determined that God has uniquely positioned us in this community, off the main highways but in a thriving community, to reach our ‘near neighbor.’ This means, while we are strongly committed to the Great Commission to take the Gospel into the whole world, we believe that our primary mission field lies right outside our doors.
Music has always been a strong point at BUMC. For over twenty years, Music Director Bob Stuart has faithfully led all choirs and overseen the overall music program at the church. Bob has given the church body a rich appreciation for all types of worship expression, thus the blending of the services. As a result of his influence and leadership, the congregation is able to enjoy stylized hymns in the contemporary services as well as occasional praise choruses in the traditional service. As Bob is retiring, the church is now looking for a vibrant Worship Pastor to join a new and enthusiastic leadership team to guide BUMC into the next chapter of its rich and diverse life.
BUMC’s philosophy of ministry is based on the Great Commandment, Matthew 22:27-39 and the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20. Because of this, our desire is to reach our community with the good news of the Gospel. We desire a worship setting that is culturally relevant and speaks to the needs of our neighbors. We believe the music ministry of our church is critical to aid us in attaining our goal. We value variety and quality in our musical expression of worship and have great expectation for our future. We desire a creative and talented individual, deeply rooted in faith in Jesus Christ to join our leadership team. Come and grow with us as we trust God to strengthen the community at BUMC and impact the community of Thornton.
OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH
What We Believe•In essential beliefs, we have unity.
“There is one Body and one Spirit … there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all …” Ephesians 4:4-6
•In non-essential beliefs, have liberty.
“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgments on disputable matters … Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master, he stands or falls … So then each of us will give an account of himself to God … So whatever you believe about these things, keep between yourself and God.” Romans 14:1, 4, 12, 22
•In all our beliefs, we show charity.
“…If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains … but if I have no love, I amount to nothing at all.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (Ph)A.ABOUT GOD
THE ESSENTIALS WE BELIEVE:
We believe in the one true, holy, and living God, creator of the universe, who by His sovereign power continues to sustain His creation and Who is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness, mercy and love. We believe the one God reveals Himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.
Genesis 1, 2, 3:22 Deuteronomy 4:13 Psalm 34:8, 89:14, 90:2 Proverbs 3:13
B.ABOUT JESUS CHRISTIsaiah 25:8, 40:10 Jeremiah 10:10, 12 Ephesians 4:2, 32
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, true God and true man, our Savior and Lord. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life. He was crucified, suffered and died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins. On the third day He arose bodily from the dead. He ascended into heaven, where He intercedes for us. We believe that He will come again in glory.
Isaiah 7:14 Matthew 1:20, 24:30 John 1:1-2, 3:16
Acts 1:11 1 Timothy 3:16 Hebrews 7:25
C.ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRITWe believe that the Holy Spirit, like Jesus Christ, is true God. We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to reveal and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and during this age to convict men, regenerate the sinner and indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godly living, witnessing and service. The Holy Spirit baptizes believers into the Body of Christ and gives them spiritual gifts for the common good of the church body and enables the production of the fruit of the Spirit in the believer’s life.
John 14:16-18, 16:7-15 Acts 1:8 Romans 8:13, 14, 26 1 Corinthians 12:7-13
Galatians 5:22 Ephesians 5:18 Titus 3:5
These various ‘fillings, manifestations, and promptings’ occur at various time intervals as illustrated in the book of Acts.
•Acts 2:37: Operative to repentance … pierced to the heart … What shall we do?”
•Acts 10:44-48: Believers are convicted, converted and receive spiritual gifts the same day.
•Acts 14:17, 19:1-7, 1 Corinthians 12:11: People who believe and were baptized at one time interval and received the ‘filling’ and manifestations at another interval. Teaches that the responsibility of dispensing spiritual gifts is at the discretion of the Holy Spirit.
•Ephesians 5:18 Teaches that it is imperative for a believer to ask and pray to ‘be filled’ with the Holy Spirit throughout one’s life.
Believers can be “Spirit-filled” but not manifest various spiritual gifts; however, Scripture encourages us to desire spiritual gifts, not forbidding their exercise. We believe these statements of faith are consistent with the Spiritual Gifts Guidelines adopted by the General Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1972.
1 Corinthians 14:39
D.ABOUT THE BIBLEWe believe that the Holy Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments are the foundation of our faith and are the inspired word of God, unchanging, infallible and inerrant in the original writings. The Bible is the final and absolute authority on all matters it addresses. There are no other writings similarly inspired by God, and all teaching and doctrine are to be based on what the Bible says, and not on what men say.
Joshua 1:8 Psalm 33:4 Mark 13:31 Ephesians 2:20 1 Thessalonians 2:13
2 Timothy 3:16 1 Peter 1:24-25 2 Peter 1:20-21E.ABOUT HUMAN BEINGS
We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. Man, from then until now, remains depraved and helpless to change his condition. His destiny, in this state, is eternal damnation in hell. Only by grace through faith, trusting in Christ alone for salvation, which was made possible by His death and resurrection, can that alienation be removed.
Genesis 1:27 Psalm 53:1-3 Isaiah 64:6 Matthew 13:49 Luke 12:5 John 3:36
Acts 4:12 Ephesians 2:8 Colossians 1:20-21 1 John 1:8
F.ABOUT SALVATIONWe believe that eternal life with God is offered as a free gift, not the result in whole or in part by human works or goodness. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and such as receive Jesus, are born of the Holy Spirit, and they become children of God. This salvation requires an individual acknowledgment of sin and a recognition that the penalty for that sin was paid for by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. This act of salvation thereby transfers our trust from ourselves and our own merits or work to a trust in Christ and His substitutionary death as the only means of salvation.
Exodus 15:2 Psalm 27:1 John 1:12, 3:16, 6:47 Romans 6:23
Ephesians 1:7, 2:8-9 Revelation 7:10
G.ABOUT THE CHURCHWe believe that the true church is composed of all such persons who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. We believe that only those who are believers in Jesus Christ shall be eligible for membership in the local church. We believe that the Lord’s Supper and Water Baptism are sacraments to be observed by the church during this present age.
Matthew 16:18, 28:19 Luke 22:14-20 1 Corinthians 11:23-29, 14:12
H.ABOUT ETERNITYEphesians 1:22-23, 2:19-22, 4:11-16, 5:23 Colossians 1:18 Hebrews 10:24-25
People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.
John 3:16 John 14:17 Romans 6:23 Romans 8:17-18
1 Corinthians 2:7-9 Revelation 20:15
